Rachel Legare's photos in Taiwan and Thailand

I took this image at an elephant refuge in Thailand. The portrait is of a mahout, elephant trainer. Many of the mahouts are Burmese refugees and share a similar history of violence as the elephants they care for.
I shot this image at a Mosque in Taipei city. I went up to the top floor where women pray during the service and took this photograph of a girl reciting the prayers into her hands.

Abigail Morgan's photos from India

The first photo was taken on a trip to Hampi, a site of religious ruins from the Vijayanagar Empire. It was taken inside of the Virupaksha temple during a ceremony for Shiva. This woman was sitting with her children lighting candles and chanting.

The second photo shows a Muslim woman dyeing fabric in a textile factory outside of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, Northern India. This woman was in the process of washing the dyed fabrics so that they could be set out to dry. Fields were covered in recently dyed fabrics that were lying in the afternoon sun to dry.

Olamide Holloway's photos in Costa Rica

This picture was taken in Sarapiqui Costa Rica, while Global College students were visiting the indigenous community of Chumiko. I was inspired to take this picture because of the beauty of the new friendship between the young girl and Global College student.

This picture was taken in La Carpio, Costa Rica. This picture was inspired by the contrasts, the young boy who is the hope for the future, is smiling and playful despite the garbage dump in the background right next to where his home his.

Kristy Mulcrone's photos from India

The first photo was taken by Kristy Mulcrone in October on a service learning trip to visit a desert village community outside of Jaisalmer. These men were collecting precious water to give to their goat herd.

The second photo was taken the same day of one of the members of the community. It shows how globalization is affecting even some of the most rural and "traditional" areas of India.

Bandona, taken March 2008, on Asi Ghat in Banaras, India by Lily Hanson. Bandona is a ten year old sales girl. Susan E Smith's photos from Ecuador and Costa Rica

This first photos was taken in the Amazon of Ecuador on an academic field trip. Our indigenous leaders used a natural berry to pain the students' faces with traditional symbols. Oh yea, and hurray for rubber boots!
This second photo was taken on an academic field trip to southern Costa Rica and the country of Panama at an Eco-Friendly "hotel" in the South-West of Costa Rica in the Corcovado Peninsula. The students stayed in electricity-free tents while we learned about Marine Biology, oceanic changes, environmental changes and local efforts to save the whales, dolphins and rain forest.

Sophie Vranian's photos from Japan

Photo Title: Momiji Season-
Description: This photo was taken at Eigen-ji, or Temple of Eternal Source, on Mt. Zuiseki in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The Japanese are crazy about the seasons, and in the fall when the maple leaves turn brilliant reds and yellows, people flock to the mountains, temples, and other spots to view the leaves.

Photo Title: A Head Above the Rest-
Description: This photo was taken during the Mikoshi matsuri, or festival near Ginkaku-ji Temple in Kyoto, Japan. Two students, Michael and Howard, are shown here returning to the main temple with the men’s group after carrying a heavy shrine around the city for 3 hours.

Sonja Lopez's photos from India

The first photo was outside of Virupaksha temple in Hampi. The picture came out almost dream-like, much like the night where everyone was rushing around for the night puja(prayer).
The second was also in Hampi. This man was sitting close to the reflecting pool in the middle of the ruins.

Emily Carson's photos in India

Photo # 1 : Taken by Emily Carson: The above photo is taken at Jaipur Foot; It is an NGO located in Jaipur, Rajasthan that creates and administers new appendages to people of all economic status in India. The India Centre did field work at Jaipur foot during the Long Field Trip this Semester.
Photo 2: The photo was taken at dawn break over the sand dunes in the Thar Desert in Rajastan, India.

Ali White's photos in India and Taiwan

First Photo: Benaras at Sunrise. Photographer: Alicia White.
Date: February 2008.
I like this photo because Benaras, like this picture, demands a closer look. In India, there is always so much happening, so many details, and yet it comes together to make something whole and unique, haunting and beautiful. This was taken one morning at sunrise on the holy river Ganga-Ji in Benaras (Varanasi), India. I took this while on CRC.
Second Photo: Statue of the Goddess Abrakabackpack. Photographer: Alicia White. Date: October 2007. This is a beautiful statue I found in Taiwan during CRC. We couldn't pronounce her name in Chinese, though we tried, so we ended up dubbing her Goddess Abrakabackpack- I'm not sure why, but such is the lunacy CRC induces in otherwise earnest world citizens!

Lily Hanson's photos in Turkey and Taiwan

Image One (tu.jpg)by Lily Hanson taken April 2008in Capadocia, Turkey during the Spring Semester of CRC, 2008. A landscape shot of the ancient city of cave dwellings, Capadocia, where Christian millet escaped the violent conflict with the ruling Ottoman Empire. In the foreground, is a tree laden with "evil eyes,"symbolic protectors from evil in Turkish culture. Image Two (IMGP2085.jpg) by Lily Hanson taken October 2007 in southern Taiwan during the Fall Semester of CRC, 2007. This photo was taken from the highest level of a huge temple dedicated to Matsu, the layered roof of which is seen in the foreground. This goddess is worshiped in coastal cities all over the Buddhist world, as she is thought to be a protector of those at sea: sailors and fisherman. In the background is a crowded harbor and the sea.

Sandra Martin's photos in Costa Rica

Photo one: Mantis. I spotted a mantis sitting on a tropical flower in the Tirimbina rainforest reserve, Costa Rica, where our class was on an educational hike. I had no idea what the creature was until a few hours later, when the photo allowed me to look at it in detail. Photo two: Banana Worker. On the trip to Sarapiqui in Costa Rica we took a tour of the Dole banana plantation. Our tour included seeing how the plant is harvested. I found it interesting that during the tour people were not working in the fields, except for the man who came to cut bananas to show us.

Julia Citron's photos in China

The first photo was taken in Suzhou, China. The second was taken in Suichang, China in a room full of Chinese people feeding us warm sweet potatoes and smoking cigarettes.

Molly Greening's photo in Costa Rica

This picture was taken on May 7th, 2008. I think it is a picture that captures the aspect of exploration in Global College.

Kristy Mulcrone's photo in Nicaragua

Here is a photo I took last year on the school trip to Nicaragua at an elementary school in Granada.

Siena Butler, Genevieve Williams, Sara Landon and Emma Harris's Photo from Costa Rica

The photo was taken on an independent trip to La Fortuna, Costa Rica on September 15, 2008, Costa Rica's Independence Day. The title of the photo is: "I only need a little bit of space in the world" and the photographers are Siena Butler, Genevieve Williams, Sara Landon, and Emma Harris.

Sophie Kirpan's photos in Costa Rica

Caption for the girl in the banana tree: A class field trip to Sarapiquí Costa Rica was the site of this photo. My classmate is climbing a banana tree on the Dole plantation site to experience what it feels like to harvest a bundle of bananas.

Caption for the boy:
This photo was taken September 20th in Costa Rica. As I was passing on my way to the market, this small boy awaited by the door admiring passing cars.
