This first photos was taken in the Amazon of Ecuador on an academic field trip. Our indigenous leaders used a natural berry to pain the students' faces with traditional symbols. Oh yea, and hurray for rubber boots!

This second photo was taken on an academic field trip to southern Costa Rica and the country of Panama at an Eco-Friendly "hotel" in the South-West of Costa Rica in the Corcovado Peninsula. The students stayed in electricity-free tents while we learned about Marine Biology, oceanic changes, environmental changes and local efforts to save the whales, dolphins and rain forest.

Description: This photo was taken at Eigen-ji, or Temple of Eternal Source, on Mt. Zuiseki in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The Japanese are crazy about the seasons, and in the fall when the maple leaves turn brilliant reds and yellows, people flock to the mountains, temples, and other spots to view the leaves.

The first photo was outside of Virupaksha temple in Hampi. The picture came out almost dream-like, much like the night where everyone was rushing around for the night puja(prayer).

The second was also in Hampi. This man was sitting close to the reflecting pool in the middle of the ruins.

I like this photo because Benaras, like this picture, demands a closer look. In India, there is always so much happening, so many details, and yet it comes together to make something whole and unique, haunting and beautiful. This was taken one morning at sunrise on the holy river Ganga-Ji in Benaras (Varanasi), India. I took this while on CRC.
Second Photo: Statue of the Goddess Abrakabackpack. Photographer: Alicia White. Date: October 2007. This is a beautiful statue I found in Taiwan during CRC. We couldn't pronounce her name in Chinese, though we tried, so we ended up dubbing her Goddess Abrakabackpack- I'm not sure why, but such is the lunacy CRC induces in otherwise earnest world citizens!

This photo was taken from the highest level of a huge temple dedicated to Matsu, the layered roof of which is seen in the foreground. This goddess is worshiped in coastal cities all over the Buddhist world, as she is thought to be a protector of those at sea: sailors and fisherman. In the background is a crowded harbor and the sea.

Photo one: Mantis. I spotted a mantis sitting on a tropical flower in the Tirimbina rainforest reserve, Costa Rica, where our class was on an educational hike. I had no idea what the creature was until a few hours later, when the photo allowed me to look at it in detail. Photo two: Banana Worker. On the trip to Sarapiqui in Costa Rica we took a tour of the Dole banana plantation. Our tour included seeing how the plant is harvested. I found it interesting that during the tour people were not working in the fields, except for the man who came to cut bananas to show us.

The first photo was taken in Suzhou, China. The second was taken in Suichang, China in a room full of Chinese people feeding us warm sweet potatoes and smoking cigarettes.

This photo was taken on the India Centre's long field trip to Rajasthan. It is shot in the morning after spending a night on the sand dunes in the Thar Desert.

These two photos were taken in Cambodia. This student and I worked at an orphanage for a little while with these children and this is our first day. They are all crowded around her as she reads stories to them in English in their one-bedroom house.
