Here at the India Center we were privileged to seven weeks of independent study and one of my projects on the marginalized used photojournalism as a medium, ringing true to the saying that a picture really does says more than 1,000 words.

Sabavita (left) and Kalavati (right), both belong to the Pardhi tribe, which have been fighting for their survival since India was colonized in the 1800's. They're ancestors were originally freedom fighters against the British and the Empire in turn labeled them as criminals under the caste system. The police still convict them of any crime that is committed in the region, Madhya Pradesh. These two women were sexually abused and electrocuted for no reason, where they stand in front of their school in this photo.

This is a portrait of a man named, Lhasang Tsering, who is a retired Tibetan activist. He was one of the first Tibetan children brought into Dharamshala and he is also the first Tibetan to speak against the Dalai Llama and his decision for Tibet to become an autonomous in China's hands.

This photo of Masha Diminsky was taken in Guanacaste during Semana Santa. I love this picture because it totally emphases Global College in so many ways.

This photo was taken in Nicaragua. The indigenous seminar class was leaving of our activities late at night and this is the picture I took on the way back to Granada in the bus.

This photo shows Lilley Mitchell with a little girl. We were in a community where people in extreme poverty were waiting to have their homes built as part of an effort by international organizations to help people in poverty. That little girl was so cute. I feel like I really captured the emotion in this picture.

This photo was taken in Granada. We walked on this street a lot during out two week stay. It was very touristy and there were people, especially children begging for money everywhere.

'Santhe' is a weekly farmer's market where producers can escape the middle men of grocery stores and sell their products at a reasonable price directly to the city and village consumers. Our class visited one morning to understand food politics in the expanding city of Bangalore, and to buy some fresh vegetables! By Sandra Martin, February 2010.

Student Anna Vreeland gets to try some block printing with a master of the traditional art in Jaipur. Although most of the fabrics now are printed en masse with screens and chemical dyes, some family companies carry on the high quality art form of using block stamps to press the natural dyes into the fabric in several layers. Experiential education goes beyond formal fieldwork as demonstrated by CRC student Julie as she delves into Turkish culture by partaking in the morning ritual of buying pretzel bread from a vendor before hurrying off to language class. Who says college is all academics? CRC students let their taste buds experience Turkish culture during a visit to a women's community cooperative NGO in Ankara. The menu? Sunset on the Lake— Udaipur's Lake Palace is famously beautiful, but the buildings on the shore are just as stunning, glowing yellow as the sun sets.

Sun Drying— Long plain white sheets are washed and then dried in the sun by being hung several meters off the ground at the Sakshi block printing factory in Sanganer, a town outside of Jaipur in the northern state of Rajasthan. There are many textile businesses here, but few remain chemical free and traditional like this one.

Making Breakfast Chapatis— My host mother for two days in the desert village Keeta makes breakfast in her kitchen for me and her children. Afterwards she goes to the front room of the small house where she teaches preschool to many kids including her own daughter.

A Bit of Everything— Indian Cuisine Elective instructor Naveen Shah tastes the dishes the class prepared for the final test, which involved planning and cooking an entire meal, and then eating it!
