Lily Hanson's photos in India

Bandona, taken March 2008, on Asi Ghat in Banaras, India by Lily Hanson. Bandona is a ten year old sales girl. She spends the mornings before school and evenings after selling diyas, candles in floating baskets, to be released with a prayer into the holy river Ganga'ji. She is also an undiscovered henna genius.
Gita, taken October 10th, 2008, outside of Fort Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, India by Lily Hanson. Gita is of the Manganiyar community, historically the musicians for the Maharajahs. Now many of them sell instruments in tourist spots. Gita finds broken ankle bells and belly chains, repairs them, and tries to sell them outside of Fort Jaisalmer. Her seven month old baby is the youngest of Gita's eight children; Gita is 35 years old.
